History

Like many neighborhood clubs built in the 1970's, Quince Orchard Swim and Tennis Club was built by the neighborhood developer, Dave Schain, as an enticement to purchase a home. Mr. Schain thought, quite logically, that he could sell more homes if there were swim and tennis facilities in the immediate area to which local families could walk. Mr. Schain added a tennis "air structure" at some point in the late 1970's to extend the tennis season beyond which was, at that time, just a Memorial to Labor Day membership.

In the spring of 1985, John Adams, then Head Tennis Professional at Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, purchased Quince Orchard Swim and Tennis Club from Dave Schain who eventually moved to Florida. John immediately began to improve the overall facilities and hired Tim Harvey as the first Head Professional in November of 1985 and John's father, Jere Adams, oversaw general club operations for the first several years. In 1989 John saw increasing interest in an indoor aquatic center and installed a new air structure over the pool area in the late winter of that year. Since that time, indoor swimming and usage of the facility by year-round swim teams looking for a winter home has absolutely boomed. Currently, we have five year-round swim teams spending their winter season with us as well as Atlantic Edge Scuba and Wet Yet, a water aerobics and fitness company.

Quince Orchard opened a new tennis facility in September of 1999 after a snow storm and local electrical outage devastated the old tennis air structure. This new structure is widely regarded to have the best indoor tennis lighting and the most room behind and between courts in the Washington, DC area. We have 160 individuals involved in our Men's and Ladies Doubles Flights; we are a home for the Chinese Tennis Association, the USTA's Junior Team Tennis; we are a recognized site for the USTA's National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) and acknowledged in Washingtonian Magazine, April 1999 issue as "the place to advance your game in Maryland."

We are extremely proud of the depth of our tennis instruction directed by Brian Fankhauser and our swim programs directed by Pam Champion. Although we are not "huge" in square footage, we think you will find our staff is huge in heart and enthusiasm with an instructional program that makes everyone feel good about themselves as they improve in personal skill.

Come on by and see for yourself what QOSTC can offer you and your family. We look forward to seeing you soon.
